Would it be a bad idea to stop pretending that challenges resolve themselves?
Every firm has challenges they purposely avoid. Are you facing any of these examples?
- An incompetent leader who accomplishes nothing but is rewarded handsomely
- A toxic manager in a position of power who infects your firm with a culture of fear, favoritism, and hostility
- A legal team with a playbook of employee intimidation
- Technical Debt ignored accumulating liabilities that will crush your firm
- Stalled or failed projects with no attempt to intervene and change course
- Do It Yourself internal projects that wander endlessly in the desert of no results
Inaction is rooted in human nature. Often, Leadership purposely ignores their challenges because they are heavily invested in the status quo. They see only risk to themselves and fail to solve for their firm.
If it’s not broken to them, why would they spend their political capital to advocate for the necessary change?
It’s rare that firms are proactive. A crisis is typically the catalyst where an outside perspective is sought or a rescue swimmer is required. In that crisis mode, the complications are now intertwined and work against the firm. Common challenges include:
- Morale is low, Trust is absent, and Flight Risk is high.
- The firm needs to remove the incompetent without creating a vacuum during that transition. As the consequences are dire, the firm remains paralyzed and inactive. They simply see no path forward for how to do that.
- Problems need to be Solved, not studied endlessly. If you don’t stop the bleeding, do you expect it fixes itself?
Is there a better way?
Perhaps.
Are you afraid to make a change? Would it be a bad idea to seek assistance?
Urgency of Action matters.
If you are serious, your next choice will be:
- Do Nothing – the default, status-quo?
- Or, Solve?
